Actor, director and painter, Jeffrey Vincent Parise has appeared in many films, plays and television shows. As fans of Millennium and Lance Henriksen will no doubt be aware, Jeffrey’s most recent film was a lead role in the feature film Dark Reel, a comedy/horror/thriller starring Lance Henriksen and Edward Furlong. Jeffrey holds the distinction amongst fans of Millennium of being Frank Black's final case. As Lucas Wayne Barr, Jeffrey was to become the last antagonist to battle Frank before he, Jordan, and ultimately the show itself, drove off into the wilderness. Jeffrey recently took time from his busy schedule to speak to us and we thank him for the kindness and support he has extended to us and to fellow fans of the franchise.
BACKTOFRANKBLACK: The creative conceit behind the character of Lucas Barr is that he possesses a transplanted evil rather than an organic one. You perfectly represented that conflict in your portrayal, shifting, in some scenes, between light and dark in quick succession. When you are building a character as surreal as that, from what do you draw your influences for that portrayal?
JEFFREY VINCENT PARISE: I think that each and every one of us has the potential to change from the extreme of light and dark on the drop of a dime and that we practice our whole lives to keep that under control. We chose light, or in some cases dark and stick with it. I draw on my own capacity and conflict of conscious choice and hedonistic, instinctual choice when playing a character like Lucas Wayne Barr.
BTFB: There is a particularly poignant moment towards the close of the episode that almost serves as a resume of the whole narrative purpose of Millennium. During an exchange between your own and Lance's character, Lucas Barr wonders if he was innately capable of such horror anyway to which Lance's character asserts that we all are. Do you agree with what is, essentially, an assertion that Millennium sought to explore?
JVP: As I touched on in the first question, I agree that we are all capable of anything. I think that we start early on in life forming an agreement with society as to what is acceptable and what is not. What works and what doesn’t.
BTFB: I was recently interviewed on behalf of the campaign and it was put to me that a contingent of people failed to see the redemption and the light that permeated Millennium's often bleak landscape. I know Lance expressed initial uncertainty himself when the idea was pitched to him. Do you think it was bold of the creative team to concentrate on facets of humanity that humanity may not want to confront? In this day and age when franchises are so mercilessly canceled do you think creative teams are less inclined to be bold and provocative and are afraid to write material that is not immediately accessible?
JVP: No, I do not think they were being bold by doing what they were doing. I think truly creative people are never afraid to confront these facets of humanity that the Millennium franchise chose to confront. Whether or not they are capable of this sort of confrontation is another question all together. I feel the truly creative are always confronting humanities flaws and it’s unworkability. We do so in order to permeate the light through it’s cracks and make humanity work.
BTFB: In our discussions with Lance he has commented that he believes Millennium would be enriched by an opportunity to present it as a movie, free from what he considers some of the sanitizing constraints of episodic television. Do you agree with this and would y
ou enjoy an opportunity to create a new character within such a thing?
JVP: Absolutely. I think the birth of such shows as The Sopranos’, Carnivalle, Dexter and True Blood, we have seen an opportunity to take series television to a whole new level. I think it would have been the same for Millennium, had there been a cable station open to running and producing the series. A film would give the same kind of freedom to explore characters and a story line that these cable shows allow.
BTFB: We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of those who contributed to the show and delighted by the high regard they still retain for it. I have read that you consider films and performing in films as those things that have influenced and inspired you the most. What was it about Millennium that provided for you the required freedom of expression that you have enjoyed in other media?
JVP: Since it was a two part episode arc, I felt as if I were shooting a film I was flown to Vancouver for a little over three weeks and put up in a really nice hotel room. Because I knew no one in that town, the time was spent doing research on serial killers and learning what made Lucas Barr tick. The writing also rang with the intelligence of a feature film. It seems to me, the most frightening aspect of a serial killer is the mind and Millennium was definitely a series for mind miners.
BTFB: Fans of Lance Henriksen and Millennium are aware that you have both completed work on the forthcoming horror movie, Dark Reel. We have heard many great things about this movie and wondered what was the experience like of meeting him again and can you share some of your own insights into the movie?
JVP: I thought Lance was great then and he is even greater now. The man has not stopped growing. It only takes a conversation to know this. He is generous with his advice and inspiring in his work. I remember being very exited rehearsing the last scene in Millennium when I had the drill to the young lady’s head and was spouting on about “We are all Sheppard's” and Lance said to me, right before we shot “Don’t forget to breath”… and he was right. I was indeed holding my breath!
BTFB: I was thrilled to discover that aside from being an actor you are an accomplished painter and writer. How long have you been painting and how would you describe your style? Did it take you a long time to establish a niche that you were comfortable with?
JVP: I have been painting now for about 15 years. 10 of which I would consider “painting seriously”. I would describe my style as modern expressionism. I paint portraits of people and artists living in Los Angeles and beyond. I have been doing an ongoing series for the past 6 years called Naked & Famous that has watched me develop into the sort of style and artist I have always longed to be.
BTFB: With so many irons in the fire, so to speak, what upcoming projects should followers of your work look forward to?
JVP: Well I am currently shooting a pilot for the WC called The Body Politic that, if picked up, I would play a recurring character by the name of Vince. I also have a guest-starring role on Party Down Coming up on the STARZ network, to air on April 17th and as far as the painting goes, I have a book coming out shortly that can be previewed and purchased on www.jeffparise.com

THA DARKSIDE VIBE - MILLENNIUM FANS SPEAK OUT
Posted by Mark Ducker | Filed under Lance Henriksen, Tha Darkside Vibe

Ever googled yourself? Go on, be honest, you're amongst friends but seriously, it is something I do occasionally to see how far and wide we are reaching as a campaign and let me assure you that far and wide is exactly where we are to be found. Since beginning this campaign we have little free time for browsing these days so we hope you will give us the benefit of the doubt if we take a while to notice your efforts and thank you accordingly.
Imagine my delight when I happened upon the following comments written by the Blogmaster of Tha Darkside Vibe.
While searching for some information on Millennium, I came across the website for BacktoFrankBlack.com. I was blown away by the campaign, the organization and the amount of passion the people behind the site had as well as the fans who visit the site. Although the fire for Millennium had never gone out completely, this reignited the fire for the show and made me want to get back on the campaign trail for this show. Rarely do shows on television get a second chance, but I think that Millennium will get a second chance. Whether it be a tv movie or a straight to dvd release, the fans deserve some sort of closure with Frank Black. We are truly indebted and honoured to regularly come across sentiments such as these from the countless individuals who support us. Busy as we are, we don't always find the time to Blog our thanks and appreciation of you all but rest assured, not a moment goes by where we don't attempt to advance this campaign still further or appreciate all you guys who are integral to our efforts.
If you have a Blog and are considering writing something about your own admiration of Millennium don't hesitate to send us word, we can thank and plug your efforts much sooner if you do. Once again, thanks to the blogmaster of Tha Darkside Vibe and to everyone else for your continued support and praise of us, to read the entry in full click here!
Keep you eyes peeled shortly for some exciting news about how you can support the continuing career of Lance Henriksen and be sure to check us out tomorrow for yet another exclusive cast interview courtesy of backtofrankblack.com

TO BE FRANK - BTFB EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
Posted by Mark Ducker | Filed under Chris Carter, Forcing the End, Frank Black, Frank Spotnitz, Lance Henriksen, The X-Files
To fans of any of 1013's hit shows, Frank Spotnitz requires no introduction. In time honoured fashion, it is customary to proceed to give one once those immortal words have been uttered but allow me to make an exception. Introduction aside, it was Frank Spotnitz who, probably unwittingly, gave rise to this campaign. His prophetic prediction that 'the time is near' prompted the Millennium Fan Community to wear their hearts on their sleeves and exercise their voices on paper. Of all 1013's luminaries Frank Spotnitz is an extremely busy man, yet finds time to give back to the fans as much as he receives and this interview was no exception. We thank Frank for somehow finding a window in his busy schedule and taking the time to talk to us.
BACKTOFRANKBLACK: Firstly, on behalf of all the fans of Frank Black and Millennium, may I offer our thanks and gratitude for taking the time to talk to us. In 1998, production on the X-Files moved to LA and Millennium remained in Vancouver. As a writer and producer on both shows did that present a challenge and result in a hectic production schedule or did business continue as usual?
FRANK SPOTNITZ: It was a challenge, to be sure, but not as big as the challenge we'd faced the previous year, when we not only launched Season One of "Millennium," but produced Season Four of "The X-Files" and "The X-Files: Fight the Future." That was by far the most difficult year of my professional life. Fortunately, when Season Two of "Millennium" began, Glen Morgan and Jim Wong agreed to take over showrunning duties, which eased the burden enormously for Chris and me.
BTFB: Millennium fans consider the franchise beyond compare and during our correspondence with the cast and crew many have echoed the sentiment that their contribution to the show represented some of the finest work of their careers. What was it about the show that allowed so many individuals to deliver such a high quality work output?
FS: I think you'd have to say it begins -- as it did with "The X-Files" -- with Chris' singular vision. There was such a clear and powerful idea at the center of the show and, like "The X-Files," that clarity allowed a lot of very talented people to come and elaborate on it, taking the show in directions I'm sure Chris never imagined. I think "Millennium" benefited and suffered from being in the shadow of "The X-Files" -- suffered, because the network was doubtless disappointed that it never achieved the popular success of "The X-Files," but benefited because Chris' success with "The X-Files" gave "Millennium" a lot more creative freedom than it would've had otherwise.
BTFB: At the conclusion of Season Three, we believe, the issue of cancellation was not immediately decided. If this was the case, were plans afoot for a fourth season and what do you believe was the direction the show would have taken during the season?
FS: Yes, we were all on pins and needles, hoping the network would decide to proceed with a fourth season. It seemed awful to us that the show would be canceled before it even had a chance to reach the turn of the millennium. Chip Johannessen and Ken Horton were really driving the series at that point and had a lot of ideas they never got to realize.
BTFB: Millennium fans have existed as an organized concern ever since the conception of the franchise. One thing this campaign has necessitated is for our community to bring its existence into the spotlight with the same vigour and commitment displayed by our friends in the X-Files universe. Has it been pleasing to discover that such a body of passionate fans exists?
FS: It's wonderful to see how many people still watch and appreciate the series.
BTFB: During our conversations with Lance Henriksen he has echoed our own sentiments that, whilst the goal of this campaign is clear, we are flexible in what we consider a successful return of the character. Should the Movie prove unattainable would you consider exploring other avenues such as television movies, direct to DVD instalments, audio book adaptations etc. in order to give the fans more of their hero?
FS: That's really Chris' call, but I would support whatever Chris and Lance wanted to do.
BTFB: Both Chris Carter and Lance Henriksen have hinted that ideas have been discussed about the format a Millennium Movie might adopt. What type of story do you envision, would it return to the mythos of the TV show or concentrate on Frank devoid of the trappings of his televisual backstory?
FS: We haven't really discussed what Chris would want to do, but I suspect it would have to serve new audiences while at the same time honoring the fans who've championed it all these years by recognizing and continuing Frank Black's journey.
BTFB: Millennium fans were delighted to see Frank Black make a brief cameo in the X-Files comic that is currently on release. You have stated that the comic is a way for you to explore aspects of the X-Files mythology that you were unable to expand upon during the course of the show. Would you like the opportunity to explore Millennium in a similar manner?
FS: Absolutely!
BTFB: You have hinted at two new TV shows that are currently in development, one of which is with NBC. Is TenThirteen related to either of these projects and when should fans expect to see them unveiled?
FS: The projects I'm doing are solo. But I look forward to working with Chris when and if he's so inclined.
BTFB: Thank you so much, Frank, for taking the time to speak to us!

As a reminder, this event takes place on 22nd April at 7.30pm at Barnes and Noble, The Grove, Los Angeles. We hope those in the area will be able to make it, and those who can't are advised to pick up the book which is a fantastic insight into Millennium's sister show.
