Here's Dirt's Thing: Luminary

Last week we begun the first in, what we hope, will be a long series of episode reviews from our very own wrestle-maniac, masked avenger and comics aficionado DiRT! As a long time fan of the series and an old hand at video based reviews, with a substantial following of his own I might had, who better to turn their x-ray vision to some of Millennium's finest entries. This weeks review is of the mighty Luminary and you may like to know that you can vote for the episode in a poll to select the theme for the next themed week of events, here.

So, did you agree? Did DiRT hit the nail on the head or miss it by a country mile? Here is your opportunity to discuss his review and to share your own thoughts on the episode in question.

Luminary remains a very popular entry in Millennium's impressive canon and we welcome all your thoughts, positive or not so positive, so don't be shy, share them in the comments section and enjoy a little Millennium Discussion with fellow fans.

As always, lend your considerable support to the man and go visit his own websites and find out what it's all about. Remember, every video made for the this campaign is an indispensable way of reaching out to a potential new campaigner.

I must confess that Luminary didn't do much for me.

I can't fault a thing on the production as a whole, everything is as expertly made as another Millennium episode.

I guess, it didn't feel much like a Millennium episode, it really went outside the whole dark millenniumistic quality we've gotten used to.

It's kinda like the Season 2 MacGyver episode "Eagles" (which is great) when he's saving two rare golden eagles from extinction. Something you would never expect to see MacGyver do that...well...in a TV episode. But of course, there are some baddies that come into the mix. But that's another story...

Luminary is a double edged sword, people either love it or don't rate it as highly as others.

I guess I want Frank Black to be on a trail on a killer than some guy that went to Alaska to get away from civilization. But there's the beauty, Frank cares.

But, indeed, great music by Mark Snow. I wonder if I can purchase those tracks on iTunes, as I really wanted more music from other episodes, they could have easily put more music on the two discs.

Cheers from Iceland!

To the best of my knowledge the music from 'Luminary' was not on the iTunes release nor the double cd release but as DiRT says it is a wonderful score.

There are certain musical segments, including Tobias Mehler's monologue, available to download at M-TIWWA and I play them repeatedly when in the mood. I wonder if this was the source of DiRT's music, if not he may well know something we don't.

And, for the record, I absolutely loved Luminary :)

I can see what Josef is saying about Luminary not being the traditional 'Frank Trailing A Serial Killer' episode but then very few of the second season adopted that format at all.

I do think however that Luminary is perfectly dark but in a very different way from what we've become accustomed to. What we are actually seeing is a young man placing himself in a situation that he knows will no doubt kill him simply because that's his calling and Frank's interest in this case parallels his, and Lara's, own stories in many ways.

Their gifts, their callings if you like, will ultimately lead to the both of paying a great price. In Frank's case it's his wife and his daughter and in Lara's her sanity.

The fact that the story is based on a true story makes it all the more bleak in my opinion.

And the Glasser/Ventoux floater thing has had be going for ages. Still can't make my mind up about that.

Great review and agreed completely about it feeling like a movie. So did Sean Penn as he went on to remake the original story in such a format ;)

Millennium got there first. Once again.

Another nice review from the man in the mask. I admire his editing skills, how he puts it all together with additional graphics etc. Very impressive when you don't know how such things are done.

Luminary is not one of the best episodes in my opinion. It's very enjoyable, don't get me wrong, but it's wide open (no pun intended) to interpretation and does leave you feeling a little unsatisfied on occasions.

Having said that I agree with dirt that is nice to see a little more flesh added to the bones of the Millennium Group and I commend the writer for that at least.

Looking forward to the next one.

★☆★☆Video Man Number Two★☆★☆ strikes again :P

I agree that Luminary is a double edged sword. On the old Millennium Forum (can't remember the name) you would find those who loves it, a lot, or hated it, a lot, and very little in-between.

I happen to love it and think it is one of the most spiritually uplifting episodes in the whole series.

I really think MillenniuM gives you what you want to get to out of it and very much depends on the type of person watching it and what floats their boat.

Keep 'em coming!

I've heard people say that when they bought the iTunes tracks, music from Luminary wasn't included. Yet, my download did have them! I randomly stumbled across it one day and it was the very first thing I ever ordered off of iTunes and the Luminary tracks instantly won me over.

Really how interesting? I absolutely adore the music from Luminary. I wonder if there were a number of versions of the original iTune release? Can anyone help me out with this as I would love to be able to purchase those tracks?

Any information will be gratefully received.

I agree with DiRT for the most part. He hit the nail on the head with several of his comments. Luminary is one of the more realistic episodes.

Luminary gave us hope that Catherine and Frank would eventually find there way back to each other and the yellow house.

Catherine showed fear and concern for Franks welfare to the point of confronting Peter Watts. This episode gives the viewer a glimpse into the future. At the end when Catherine hands Frank the envelope from Peter Watts, after he reads it, Frank tells Catherine that he doesn't know if it matters. Is Frank giving the Millennium group a second thought?

Everyone climbs Mt. Ventoux at some point in their lives. I can only hope that we to come down with more knowledge than when we climbed to the top.

DiRT's opinion of the music is right on as well.

Keep up the excellent reviews.
